Erdasa - Jazz Vocal Trio
Once Sara Goldenthal joined guitarist David Clarke and bassist Eric Davis, and having noticed the possible arrangements of the first two letters of their names after a few rehearsals, ERDASA was formed. After collaborations with musicians in other groups and international tours and national tours on both coasts, Sara, David, and Eric began their own project based in the Portland, Maine area. They have performed weddings and other functions throughout Mid-Coast Maine, and all of New England including the Boston area. The members of ERDASA seize every opportunity for creating music together, reinterpreting jazz standards in their unique and soulful way, and sharing their musical experience with their audience.

When performing, what do you want to transmit to the audience?
Well, since we mostly perform standards, and people already have an idea of how these songs sound, we want to present a subtle twist to each tune. One of the ways we achieve this is through the texture of our group sound, which is very cohesive and conveys a particular mood for each song. We perform together well as an ensemble and present a synthesized, yet not artificial, sound.

Where is the most exciting place you've performed?
In Eugene, OR, I can't remember name of the place, there was a coffeehouse/ restaurant run by former writers with a very eclectic audience. The literary aspects, and interests, of the place were evident in the people and the environment. The audience feedback was good and because of my interest in literature the place really captivated me.

Why did you form this group?
I've known Dave for a while; we've been members of the same musical community. We started playing as a duo. Then, we met Eric and he asked to play and sit in regularly. It was one of those experiments that just clicked. After three or four months together it was working well and we've stuck together.
-
What qualities make your group different from other groups that play similar musical styles?
One thing is that the voice is the first thing that jumps out at the audience in any vocal jazz group. My voice has a quality that I've personalized that I hope comes through. I think my voice jumps out with a combination of sweet and full. I try and portray an emotional quality with this sweetness/ fullness.

If you could perform with another musician, living or dead who would it be?
Bill Evans's piano playing is a perfect fit for voice. His playing was gorgeous and he demonstrated a sensitivity and lushness with an incredibly beautiful chord sense.

What inspired you to be a musician?
For me it was a natural progression. I'd have to say, though, that in college I got serious about jazz. It was a conscious decision and developed as I listened to more and more great music. Listening to the greats, especially Chet Baker and Johnny Hartman, and learning new and different ideas became my inspiration.
