    Kelly Roberge: Solo Saxophone

Kelly Roberge, saxophone, combines musical passion with an energetic delivery, no matter the musical context. A regular of the Boston music scene, Roberge's solo saxophone renditions of pop and jazz standards is a perfect choice for both elegant occasions and pleasant listening at any event. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and New England Conservatory of Music, Kelly, is a regular performer not only with his own group, but others throughout the U.S. He has performed with the house big band at the world renowned jazz club Birdland in New York, been a part of east and west coast tours with the Ez Weiss Sextet, and also recently embarked on a national tour of Japan.

    • Where is the most exciting place you've performed?
That would certainly have to be the Fleet Center. It was a gig in front of 20,000 people; I had never performed for that many people before. Energy filled the entire room, and visually, it was very engaging for me as a performer. The most amazing thing was looking up at the screens and seeing me on there, being shown to those 20,000 people.

    • What musical qualities make your sound different from other saxophonists that play similar styles?
One thing that comes to mind is my use of some extended techniques that are particular to the saxophone that I use to enhance the solo saxophone tunes that I play. These would include overtones, extended range, quarter tones, which all liven up my sound musically, in each of the contexts in which I play.

    • If you could perform with another musician, living or dead who would it be?
Steely Dan. That would make me happy. They've always been my favorite. Their music is unique and always ahead of its time musically. Their tunes speak to me personally. I remember growing up listening to them since I was in the cradle!

    • What's the most memorable performance you've seen, and why?
Johnny Griffin (saxophone). He performed with a ton of energy from the beginning of the show to the end. That commitment inspired me to have energy throughout my performances from wire to wire.

    • What inspired you to be a musician?
Benny Goodman, the King of Swing. The first instrument I played was the clarinet. Shortly after I started, my mother brought home a tape of Benny Goodman. I didn't know I had perfect pitch at the time, but I had the ability to play along with his solos by ear, and that hooked me.

    • What are three words that describe your musianship?
      Energetic, creative, eclectic.
